Default PC Upgrade

Hi

I currently run a pc with amd 3000+ processor and thinking of purchasing new pc with amd x2 duel core. Maybe 4800 or 5200.

My question is, would I see a significant improvement in speed?

My current pc would be used for gaming, net etc whereas new pc would be for music production only.

You should see a significant improvement in speed, but consider Intel dual core CPU's as well as they tend to edge ahead of AMD chips. If you're building a new PC then it's worth looking into. What sort of budget are you looking at?

The AMD Athlon64 3000+ (which I presume is the one you've got) runs at around 2GHz. The AMD X2 4800 runs at 2.4GHz and has the same amount of effective cache per core. Basically, a single application will run appropriately faster (probably about 10%, give or take) if it's not multi-threaded, which is likely. The benefits of a dual core CPU in most situations are more around multi-tasking - if you habitually run lots of apps at the same time, that's where you'll reap the biggest rewards.

I'm not convinced of that tbh, I have a friend who runs an Athlon 64 2800 and X2 4400 system of otherwise similar specs. The X2 runs Paint Shop Pro MUCH more smoothly than the A64 machine. Could be just that piece of software but the difference is remarkable.

That's because PSP (like Photoshop) is multithreaded....
