Default What has been the most trickiest song your cover band had to learn ?

As a band , we have been together for years. All very experienced musicians with a huge repertoire of songs covering most stuff from Classic rock through to a few Vai and Satch numbers and everything else in between, Rush, Pearl Jam, Yes, Lizzy and even Zappa.

With over 400 songs in our very complete and enhanced set we have only ever got stumped on one. We ended up spending hours on Black fricking Dog. Did Bonham really mean to play like that or was Page doing his usual freetime trick ?

Most bands tell us they never has an issue with that track, BUT...........You never hear them play it . Mmmmmm ?

+1 on the 'black dog' thing!!
Thats the one song we gave up on-just couldnt be bothered to spend the practice time getting it right!

Nothing else i can think of has been beyond our means....

although it is a bit hit and miss when i play the intro to 'Mr brightside' (that stretch is tricky at 'cool' guitar strap length!!!!!!!!!)

Black Dog - 118bpm , 4/4 time. Its obviously pretty free , but it can't be that hard can it ?

Hmmm, either 'Nobodys Fault But Mine'
or a 'YYZ / La Villa Strangiato' medley.
never had probs with Black Dog tho' but then again I do play about as loose & sloppy as Pagey does.

We could play it straight, but getting the Page /Bonham feel was really tricky. My theory is very very poor, otherwise I could explain the problems we had.

We nailed it in the end and have since played it to death.

But I tip my hat to any band who after learning the parts at home get it together on first practice as per the record. I wish we could have achieved that

The breakdown in Judas Priest's Delivering the Goods is just so easy to lose the groove on. And, from the same Priest cover set, The intro to The Sentinel was a bit of a bitch. 99% of Priest is a piece of piss to play, but the other 1% really isn't!

I remember Maiden's Number of the Beast being surprisingly tricky, too.

Black Dog is an absolute motherfucker! That 5:4 bit is just so wrong, that it's nigh on impossible to get right...

Apparently Plant & Krauss have been doing Black Dog on their tour, with a banjo playing the 5/4 riff
