What are people's thoughts on the Boss GT8 multi effects pedal? I am thinking of getting one as they are reduced to 199 with the release of the GT10. I am in the market for a new amp and was going to go with a line 6 model however I feel that it might be better to buy a loud valve amp and use a good quality multi effects board in front of it. Thoughts and suggestions please?

I don't own one but from the few times I have tried it, I really like it. The modelling is not quite so accurate as the Line 6 stuff (according to the corksniffers)but the fx are excellent, Lots of technology to get to grips with and it is very flexible.
Don't be fooled by the £200 price tag 'reduction', many shops have done it for that price for some time if you haggle. BTW, do a search on the forums, I am sure someone was offering a nearly new one for £165 ish. dilbert.

The GT8 is awesome. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll try to answer them.

GT-8 combines both amp modelling and effects. It scores highly for live use because the sounds are pretty good, and it is easy to operate on stage. Opinions about amp modellers vary. Received wisdom is that, for recording use, the GT-8 is OK, but units like the Tonelab are better. IMO the GT-8 effects are better than rivals in the same price bucket. Certainly better than Line 6 effects. The GT-8 also has the advantage that many of the standard effect sounds that we are used to hearing come from Boss pedals.
Re your 'loud valve amp' idea: I've used the GT-8 with both a 50w 2x12 valve combo, and direct to the PA. I hate to say it, but you are going to have to make your own mind up about which combination sounds best for your type of playing. One word of warning. The GT-8, like its competitors, is a complicated piece of equipment to program. It takes a while to learn how to get the best out of it. In my case it took at least 6 months, even though I'd used similar units in the past.

For £200 the GT-8 is a bargain....or go 2nd hand n get one for less. Buy one and dont look back. Me though, being the type of GAS addict that I am, what with the GT-10 on the scene I'd be wanting to save a little while longer and go the whole hog. But really, the GT-8 is all you could ever have need of then some. Only thing I dont like about it and others like it are the wacky effects, that to me personally are useless. Stuff like ring modulator....waste of space IMO.

Shocking. Ring Modulation is the way forward, especially when one can assign it to the rocker on the GT8.
