I want to hear more about applying theory, not who's metaphoric theoretical todger is biggest. We all know that your extended commute and voracious reading habits means you'll win - just no more wiggly lines m'kay

Currently rapt watching Jimmy Bruno's Inside:Outside DVD, where one by one he introduces the #s & bs into playing a C ii/V7/I (and ii7b5/V7/i) - "Let's try Eb !, Ok, now an Eb Major Triad, then back to CMaj, now try Ebm - see, it's up to you". It's simple, and simply brilliant.

He's very much for playing the b5/#5/b9/#9 etc in context rather than trying to remember a a brazillion scales and arbitary substituion rules (like Ab Mel Min over G7 etc).

What he doesn't advocate on the other hand is musical illiteracy - you need to understand the theory - but it starts with hearing it first.

That's kind of what I was getting at, seemed that this thread seemed to be drifting far into theory anorak territory

Anorak is a good thing btw, it's why we're all here, well why we started here anyway ! But we Anoraks all need to be told when we are talking in tongues

That's the sar-chasm

I love music theory in the same way I like Sudoku .. and I liken these kids tinkering with mathematical permutations and combinations of the chromatic scale or deciding to base all their music on a western analogue of an exotic scale to people trying to solve real mathematical issues using Sudoku.

Sudoku isn't really mathematics, it's logic using symbols that happen to be numbers; these people trying to find names for the modes of some dusty old scale noone gives a fuck about would be better off buying Wayne Krantz's Improvisers OS - where they're guaranteed that they'll play the same notes learn to recognise them and play over them rather than piece together a few pretensious sound-bites to cover their insecurities at the guitar shop... in short play it on the guitar then MAYBE figure out a name for it.

Jal, I can't really see the problem... posting stuff about this thread sucking... if it does, don't read it... what are you hoping for by registering your disapproval? You want it all to stop? Might help to say why you think it's wrong, you know contribute a little.
I had noticed the sarcasm, I thought I was joining in. Sorry about that. "Humour" not meeting "forum" as successfully as I had hoped. I'll go back to eating biscuits and reassess how much free theory advice I actually post on here.....

stop ...i did not dis...You.../ was not trying too / meant too… I felt that needed to be cleared…

I just cant stand the major scale..it was made century's ago..for purpose of, let me say… not for true things....look at the history of music you will see.. as in, if people did not conform to it / using it / not to speak against it, ect.. that was the name of the game, if you spoke against it / played other then, and people found out.. You were persecuted for it, thrown in jail, house arrest, exiled, executed, dismembered in some form / another..

Question? #1 Why is the major scale made by 5-5ths-up-with-1-5th-down from the supposed? Root…

Lightbulb Question#2?

Question#2? So to be a true scale by 5ths you would have to start on the root and go 6-consecutive 5ths-up from the root, but that would change the root..? in-turn-would–change-the-key?

The guitar's centuries old too. What you want is Guitar Hero - that's not even been around for a decade.

Lightbulb Question#4?

Question#4?there is still a tri-tone with-in the major scale?..instead of the tri-tone between the root and the fourth(4th) scale degree (as-it was-and-should-be)!!..they moved it between the so-called (4th degree and the so-called (7th )degree???

Mate try asking simpler questions like:

Question#4 What tempo are we playing at?
Question#5 What key are we playing in?
Question#6 Does this sound okay?

Leave the musical history to musical historians, it just sounds like a pretensious sound-bite for Kerrang magazine interview - "Yeah we use the Lydian Dominant Scale cos it's killed less honest people than any other scale in the history of stamp collecting... I mean music."
