Default Recommend a 50-100 watt all valve 2x12 combo for a budget of around £450-£500.

I have been asked to recommend a 50 - 100 watt all valve 2x12 combo for a budget of around £450 £500. Even though I have a lot of vintage amps, I'm pretty much using modellers these days. So I said I would ask the experienced collective and he can sort the wheat from the chaff.

I did suggest a Peavey Valveking 212 because I played around with the half stack for a few weeks and found it pretty good. But thats where my experience ends with the current valve combo offerings.

So here is what he wants :

Must Have :

2x12
All valve
50 Watt min
Two channels min ( pref more )
Good tight distortion and nice clean

Would be nice but not important

DI outs
Send and Returns

Budget £450 - £500

Style of music

Gigs up to three times a week in a covers band playing anything from Metallica, Vai , Classic Rock and beyond. Prefers not to use floor boards, but does use pedals.

Are you sure he need 50W? I'd imagine 30W would provide enough ooomph? I ask because that would open up the options a bit.

This is true, and so (altogether now) 'Peavey Classic 30'. Or the 50 if it MUST be 50W, but 30 will be plenty for most things.

I've been to see them a few times and they are bloody loud. Even so a VC30 would cut it.

But suggest some 30's and I will try and point out the benefits.

Laney LC rather than the VC. Probably suited more to rock/metal than the VC. I use the VC30 which has plenty of volume in a live situation and takes pedals very well. Would think the VC or LC 50 would give a bit more clean headroom to play with though

I agree a VC30 2x12 will be loud enough for anything IMO. I used to have one of those - fantastic clean sound and VERY VERY LOUD..a poor mans AC30 isnt a bad description actually. A Peavey Classic 30 also will be good for most things unless you want massive clean headroom. A Classic 50 will be great also.

Bottom line- It takes motor skills and practice to develop fast clean playing but a brain to use it wisely and rock guitarists are still recovering from the 80's.
All in all sound is in the ear of the beer holder

The Laney TT series would appear to be over budget, the Classic 30 is only a 1x2 and the Classic 50 2x12 is also over budget.

I double checked with him and one channel MUST have tight distortion & it must be 2 x12. He has tried the Laney LC and VC and rules them out.

The only amp I can think of that checks all those boxe's is the Peavey Valveking 212.
I know from experience the dirty channel is very tight and focused. They can be had for £310 and at 100Watts there plenty loud enough.

A lot of the suitable Marshalls are also over budget. I might add he wants new as well.
