You may be better off buying aftermarket "naked" pickups, but if you want to stick with the ones you have then this should do it...
1) Remove strings 2) Unscrew pickup surrounds 3) Remove surrounds (pickups should stay in them) 4) Unscrew the height adjusting screws from the legs of the pickup (now you know how that bit works, how exciting )4.5) Don't let the screws ping off somewhere (personal experience) 5) You should now be holding the pickup, it should still have wires going into the guitar 6) Look at the bottom to see whether the pickup cover is soldered to the baseplate 7) If it is, you're going to have to break that joint. You may be able to cut through it or you might have to use a soldering iron (be careful, the heat will conduct through the cover) 8) Unscrew the polepieces a bit so they stand proud of the pickup cover. Then hold up the pickup cover and push down on the polepieces to remove the pickup, this might work, however... 9) The pickup is probably going to be wax potted which might mean you can't just push the cover off. You could try heating the cover with a hair dryer to melt the wax that's sticking it. 10) Push off the cover, you'll have to remove the screw polepieces and then put them back in afterwards. 11) DO NOT remove the tape around the coils 12) Reassemble the pickup without the covers. As for the sound, it won't be a dramatic change. It might sounds slightly different (people usually report a slightly brighter, edgier sound. |
