Default Gotta learn to slide!!!!!!!

A friend of mine just bought me a gov´t mule dvd and WARREN HAYNES IS INCREDIBLE. I just have to learn how to slide!! I´m under no illusions that I´ll sound like Mr Haynes but I´m gonna give it a damn good go.
So, are any of you lovely people slide guitar players? If so any information on good books to buy, tuition DVDs, even other great slide guitarists to listen to would be a great help. Thanx a lot and I´m off to the shops get me a glass bottle of aspirin.
My god thank you for the blues!!!!

Warren has done a DVD and a book:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Warren-Hayes...7855089&sr=8-3

I've got them both. IIRC the DVD is more of a general guide to his style and approach and it covers both regular and slide playing.
The book is more specific and is basically a bunch of licks that you can copy from the tab and the included CD.

I prefer the DVD but that's just me.
What's great about Warren's slide style is that he plays predominantly in standard tuning so there's no arseing about trying to learn different scale patterns. Of course some of the more authentic blues stuff only really works in the various open tunings.

I'm still a beginner but the biggest single tip I ever got regarding slide is that it's much more about the right hand (assuming you play right handed) than you realise! If you want to do that Warren/Duane/Derek thing then you'll need to get used to damping the unused strings with your right hand fingers. This is why I find it much easier to slide without a plectrum a-la-Duane.

Also pick up a copy of the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East (if you haven't already got it) for some classic Duane.
The more recent Allman Brothers Live at the Beacon Theatre DVD has some staggering playing from both Warren and Derek Trucks.

Default Check out David Gilmour

Check out David Gilmour's slide playing on Pink Floyd's Meddle album and on their song Shine on You Crazy Diamond, the part right after the song Wish You Were Here.

One thing that I've read about that I haven't tried, is to use a screwdriver to act as a temporary nut to raise the action of your strings if you have really low action on your guitar. Of course, you'd have to retune, and be careful to not mess up your nut and fretboard, but I wish I'd heard or thought about it earlier, since I probably would've practiced slide guitar more often.

You´re not wrong about it being hard! I´m a decent player but this is like a whole new instrument and quite frankly I sound shit. I´m not giving up that easily though. Thanx for your answers guys!!!

I try to play slide (admittedly badly). If you are lucky then you can have a guitar dedicated for slide duty (i have a squier affinity telecaster with axetec parts for this job and its fucking superb!). You'll want a medium to high action, heavy strings (11's minimum) and tune it to an open tuning, such as E, A, D or G.

Slides come in lotsa different types. The main different types are glass and metal. You'll not go far wrong if you buy a jim dunlop slide. Generally if it's electric guitar then use glass, acoustic then use metal. (in reality you use what the fuck you want to use).

As for slide players, check out Derek Trucks.
