Default Custom guitar paint jobs

I am considering getting a custom paint job done on a guitar (racing stripes, as it happens).

I'm currently emailing all the guitar refinishing people I know of to get a price quote.

If anyone on the forum has had a job like this done, please could you post your experiences? If I do this, I obviously want to make sure it's a really good job.

I can't decide if you're a genius or an idiot. Maybe you're both...

Thank you Nick, that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me.

My idea of a cool guitar is one that makes a lot of people go: "Why the fuck did you buy that?!"

You could probably get that effect from quite a few people on this forum by buying any guitar made by Gibson. Oh hoh! Topical comedy ahoy!

If you just want racing stripes then you can get vinyl ones on Ebay...

As daft as Sporky's suggestion sounds, it's a very good one.

A large number of spray jobs on part and bodywork are first done in vinyl. This way if the effect is not what you were expecting, there time to try something different without to much cost. The way a drawing looks on paper is often not the same as it looks on the full sized item.

Once the airbrushing is done and the clearcoat goes on, that's a hell of an time to change your mind.

I've thought about it for a couple of ideas I have and spoke to people at guitar shows about it.

I didn't bother in the end because although there are some great artists out there who paint motorbikes/cars/helmets/guitars, it seemed like they wanted to charge a fortune but wanted me to do a lot of the process. They wanted me to strip the guitar and send them the body only. I also had to provide the final high-res design of what I wanted (which IMHO uses my skill & time on Photoshop). Then the guitar body would be sent back and I'd need to put it back together myself. [/moan]

For a fraction of that price, I could create my own design and get the people who make graphics for vans to print one for me. I met a bloke who does that for a living and allegedly, they can be fitted and removed quite easily with a hair dryer. A bit like what Barry H said really.

Now now nick, you know the rules. You must only own forum approved gear. Once that gear is no longer in style you must sell it and buy new forum approved gear
