Not trying to be funny or anything, but 2 admin guys have not only read this thread, but one has taken time to post an entirely flippant comment, and the other seems upset that someone thinks theres a conspiracy going on.
Any chance that you could post a reply that would perhaps give an indication as to what the Music Radar staff feel about this? This is "The place for music makers" Thank you. ![]() Last edited by ZombyWoof : 04-07-2008 at 08:11 PM. |

Hi all,
We're gauging the reaction from other forum members on this - at the moment there have only been a few different people posting on this thread. Currently, our thoughts are that the topic would be too quiet to warrant a topic in itself but we might consider renaming the listening lounge title and description so it's broader, covering discussion about all original music rather than just a place for links for finished songs. Debate below!

Thanks for taking the time to consider this.
![]() It does look like there would be too few people interested, which is a shame. I've spent most of my life avoiding songwriting, because I felt it was some mystical thing that only the truly talented were capable of doing. I've only recently decided to learn how to write songs and I know that there are lots of talented people here with more experience than me that could help me on the way. The listening lounge idea sounds good - there's not a lot of activity in there anyway, so broadening the scope might draw more people in. Last edited by ZombyWoof : 04-08-2008 at 12:00 PM. |

Quick plug - in the meantime, check out MusicRadar's lyric writing tips tutorial, which might help with the words side of things. Eventually, we hope to have some more songwriting tips up.

My take on this is it's a 'build it & they will come' sort of thing
![]() I think the nature of it is that it may well be quiet at first but could well build over time. The problem with just sticking this sort of topic under a bigger one like the listening lounge is that threads will just quickly get lost beneath the churn of other LL posts. And as good as the forum is, it seems crazy to ignore the whole songwriting aspect as it's such an important aspect of music itself. It's like a film site where you're not able to discuss the plot Granted it's less easy to articulate 'how' to write or what's good / bad in composition than it is to comment on technique or equipment in some of the other sub-fora, but that in itself is why it'd be helpful to be able to have some discussion on it. Even if there were relatively few active contributors to a specific songwriting / composition section, I'm sure there'd be a lot of interested readers. Also this may be an area that could foster some more collaboration between people - and if the site wants to foster community & stickiness, imo this is one of the most important areas! |

As for posts getting lost, this is inevitable in a large forum. We've had around 10,000 new users sign up since we launched and (hopefully) this figure is only going to increase. This will make the forum topics busier and busier and unfortunately, more and more posts will get 'lost' and there's nothing we can do about it. I hope you understand, therefore, that we can't keep adding topics just because one topic is too busy, as we'd end up with hundreds. There are also other ways of ensuring you don't lose track of a thread such as thread subscription. That being said, we're into songwriting as much as the next man or woman, and if there's demand then we'll seriously think about it - although a listening lounge rebranding does look to be the most likely option at the moment. There are also other possibilities such as sticky threads... more opinions need to be heard first though!

There may be an air of selfishness in my resistance to that idea ( I love the LL as it is) but there is also good sense. If you did what you just preposed, you would be choosing to put a stone in the shoe of the listening lounge turning it into a confused bifunctional forum, and also missing out on the opportunity to "kill several birds" with that same stone. (how poetic) Set up a Singers forum, which would incorporate Gear such as MIc's and vocal compressors, Vocal techniques, Singing styles, Songs lyrics, song books and discussion on Song writing. No need to ruin the Lovely listening lounge by burdering it with an extra (frankly unrelated topic) when eveuntually, as the site grows, if it grows, will take on enough singers for them to want their own place anyways. I'm not going to go over board to push the idea, becasue frankly it makes perfect sense and speaks for itself. you'd be handicapping one existing forum instead of creating a new one which would be better suited anyways, and and that is bound to be created in the near future anyways(provided the site continues to grow, that part is up to you guys).

I think you might have misunderstood us Auron - if we did change the Listening Lounge, it would be for songwriting and original music (much as it is now) - not for singers...
Songwriting is, I'm sure you'll agree, highly related to the listening lounge at present, although we're open to more thoughts.
