Smile starting up home recording

Hi. I'm looking to start some home recording once I finish university and was just wondering if anyone had any advice on certain gear that I could buy. It would just be bedroom stuff with drum tracks being sampled or recorded elsewhere. my main concerns right now are getting a pair of monitors in the price range of 300ish pound. Also, if I am only recording a couple of tracks at a time at most, what kind of outboard gear should i get should it be a small mixer or audio interface etc? Cheers...

well if its only a small room based studio i would go for just audio interface you can always get a mixer later if you want one. I use a presonus firepod but if you only want a couple of tracks you could go with something smaller. Monitors KRK rokit RP5 are a good pair and then you always have the yamaha's. All under £200 on ebay.

I agree with the KRKs. Also good if you can find them - Event TR5s. The new versions are TR6s with larger cones and two ports - but the old TR5s are great. I think around £360 when new 3-4 years ago so should be available fairly cheap.

As far as interface goes, for a couple of inputs and shitloads of room for expansion Tascam FW1804 or M-Audio FW1814. As long as your computer has a Firewire connection.

yeah cheers guys. I have a tascam us144 alredy which i hooked up to my laptop just for basic recording but i have had nothing but problems with it. I updated my ram to stop it crashing which is seemingly has done. (i run it using cubase). However, now the problem lies in the fact that after a few mins of recording, the volume cuts out completely and i have to restart my computer. I have downloaded new drivers for it in the past but cant fathom out the problem. Needless to say i am not v happy with it.
