Talking peavey valveking

hi guys, as ive posted up before, im in the market for a new amp that can allow me to have a good chunky but controlled distortion sound and ive been impressed with sound city and some of the cheaper mesa boogie combos. one guy suggested a peavey valve king head and i have came across the peavey valve king 212 combo for 330 pound. does anyone have any info on this amp as to whether its any good or what sound i can expect from it. cheers

I had a 1x12 for a bit. Very good amp for the money.

Metal/rock sounds are execllent out of it. Blues crunch isn't anything special though.

What music do you play?

i like the guitar sounds from the punk pop genre i like to have balls to the distortion but not sound messy it has to sound tight. i also like an angels n airwaves u2 type sound as well

You proobably won't go wrong then mate.

It can do respectable cleans with some pretty balls out distortion into dirty metal.

Remember to budget for footswitch though.

I'm sure you can get 'em cheaper than that!

£279

Job done!

VK range are the best in that price range for high gain valve tone. The gain stages sound super thick & tight . Not to mention very heavy low end and crisp highs.
They have 2 inputs one low gain one high gain + a gain boost switch for even more filth.
I think they are biased to last the distance so very reliable also !

Na no foot switch but you don't have to use the peavey one just a 2 channel F.S will do.
If you can find a good price on the web soundcontrol will price match it .
I got a one for £270 .100w ValveKing Head .
Its basically a budget amp aimed at the 6505 crowd in terms of tone but totally different amp obviously .
Doesn't sound so harsh as the 6505 but has about the same amount of gain with smoother EQ .
All in all the best value for money . Even if you can afford say a 6505 or a Mesa Boogie I can guarantee that after trying a VK your going to ask your self "are those higher priced models really worth the extra money?"

The other option might be the Blackstar HT Distortion X (valve pedal) combined with fairly modest amp. Still waiting to hear one of those with my own ears though.

Build quality is my only concern with the VK. The 5150 was a solid bit of kit, I've not seen the 6505 but I bet it's the same level. The VKs I've seen look and feel plastic-y, so don't be too surprised if it won't take a huge amount of punishment.

Bearing that in mind though, for £300 they sound fantastic.

Yeah, That's the problem with all the "cheaper gear that sounds good".

It's Farly easy to come up with a nice sounding piece of equipment this days...

I mean, the technology is so advanced that it's cheep and easy to build 3GHz CPU's!!!

The problem is that in order to reduce costs the material can't be very resistant and the construction needs to be fast and cost efficient.

That's why I would never trust in Behringer gear for an important concert (just an example). I never now if I can rely on it!

But if you are in the market for a great sounding tube amp and don't intend to do professional gigs all over the country go for it.

Just treat it with care and you will be OK

Yes to almost everything that's been said. With what you're saving over a Fender, Marshall etc you could treat it to a flightcase too and have something to get it off the floor at gigs as an added bonus.
