Default keep classic cars petition

If you love old cars, or own one, you may want to sign this petition

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Classic-Cars/

Another preposterous suggestion by the government!

Old cars don't necessarily pollute more, and as my little 15 year old car is much cheaper on car tax than the other half's few years old Saab, I can only assume that the DVLA agree!

I actually think that's a damn sensible idea. If you want to reduce pollution that's due to cars, then take all non-catalytic converter cars off the road, after all there's no way you're going to come close to passing the current MOT emissions test without one, so they are ipso facto more polluting.

The fact that the road tax is lower is merely a function of when it was registered. After all, I pay £180 a year for my road tax, a later model car would only be £145. No difference in the emissions, just a function of when it's registered.

Mine was registered in 1989 My car is therefore older that 15 years old, and passes it's emissions test thus far. If a car doesn't pass an emissions test, then it fails its MOT and isn't on the road anyway!

It depends what you are measuring against. A 1980s Golf produces less CO2 than a modern golf, as the car was hell of a lot lighter, but pushed out more CO, NOx.
Stick a cat on the same car (not the furry variety) the CO2 will go up a little but less CO and NOx and it will still produce less CO2 than todays golf.
Why use a stick everytime. Give the classic car owners an incentive to make the old car produce less crap.
I used to have a TR7. When leaded petrol became unavailable, I had to change the valve seats so I could take unleaded. Could have easily fitted a cat then.
One thing to note. A modern diesel car pushes for polution out than a modern and much faster super car.
These would have to be banned as well. Classic cars are a very small minority. Most cars have a shelf live of only 14 years

Quite.

Most Classics are lovingly cared, maintained and tuned far more than day-to-day cars - plus they're normally only driven on dry weekends. Think musos are anoraks - classic car owners are far worse !

I am torn over this issue.

As much as I want a shocking pink early 70s Ford Capri with leopard print interior I think it should be my responsibility to ensure that it runs within modern emission expectations.

Hmmmm...

I'm not sure I can sign.

Ah! Good. I am a bit out of the loop re: MOT. Used to know all about them when I was younger due to my Dad and brother!

I used to love sitting in my Dad's garage watching the mechanics do an MOT when I was five or so! Odd child!

The emissions for the MOT are based on the emissions at time of registration of the car.
Not modern emmisions.
If I were to drive a 1950 7L Jag V12, it would completly obliterate todays emissions, but would still pass quite happily if the emmisions were the same as they were supposed to be in 1950
