Hi
I currently have a pc running xp home and intend to add another base unit for music. They will both be using same keyboard, mouse & monitor . Is it possible to use the same os for both or will I have to purchase another one? Rob |

iirc XP home makes you do that online registration thing doesn't it ? If so, it get's its serial number from a combination of the hardware in the machine so the online registration database knows if the same license is in 2 machines with very different hardware (ie different machines rather than a machine where the graphics card was upgraded!)
Check though (or just wait for someone who actually KNOWS to come along )

I'm pretty sure you'll need an extra licence.

It won't work. You can certainly dual boot on the same copy of XP, but using it on completely different operating hardware will not work.
Although, you could technically say you upgraded your computer, but then if something happened to the old machine you wouldn't be able to reinstall. You're basically asking for a multi-license OS. |

Officially you need another license.
I do believe though, that XP only bitches after 4 copies.

Well thanks for the replies. Its as much as I expected to be honest. So what happens if I want to do away with my present pc and get another one that doesn't come with an os? It seems unfair that I have to purchase another copy! But I guess thats microsoft for you. Always on the make.

If you bought your copy of XP then you can transfer it - if it came with the PC, then M$ sold it at a huge discount to the OEM manufacturer and is part of that PC and cannot be transfered.
