Default Devil Rising

Hi Guys,

just finished a new choon and I'd realy appreciate your feedback. You can hear it at
www.wee.demon.co.uk

and the song is called 'Devil Rising'

Its about the war in Iraq, globalisation, artificial pop stars, pandering media.... you know all the usual stuff.

thanks for listening!

cheers
Michael

I think you would have got more responses had you not have put the 'poll' in!

About the hit and miss thing. As a track ( not my scene but ) it is very well recorded IMO and I do like it. ( where, how was it done? )

The content is excellent, the begining kinda reminded me of Pink Floyd, not a song in particular, just something!!!???

Maybe it breaks too early and a longer intro would work better. Vocals are nicely recorded, the odd effect here and there is noticeable and subtley done.

'middle 8 change is cool' with a nice touch of verb at the last bar.

It's a very 'pro' track IMO and superbly recorded. Only thing in my mind, was that I lost the kickdrum after the intro. Is that deliberate and has this song been pro mastered.

Again as for the hit and miss thing, well really wouldnt like to say, but there are those who like the rock side of music on here who could pass better comments than I in this genre.

Although I liked the track and thought the production was superb, nothing grabbed me in the way of a 'hook'. I identified with the bass the most and was hearing that ( apart from the vocal ) I needed bigger drums and less crash cymbal appearance to 'kick it off' for me.

Why didnt you intoduce harder drums during the chorus? I think that would have helped with its authority!

Anyway, quality stuff.

I will have a listen to the other stuff available. Great stuff mate.

Jay.

HI wildthing,

 yeah you're right about the poll. I hadn't seen this feature on a forum before and curiosity got the better of me! Unfortunately.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm flattered you thought it was a pro track, because it was recorded in my bedroom

I've had a listen to the chorus and you are spot on. I also lose the kcik drum in the chorus and I'm annoyed I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out.

The vocals were recorded with a Studio Projects C1 mic and a Focusrite Penta front end. I put a wee bit of extra compression (Timeworks) in the mix just to give it a bit more depth.

To chnage the vocal dynamics I routed the track to a buss in Sonar 3 and stuck the Lexicon reverb plugin in there. I then automated the send on the buss to vary the amount of reverb being applied.

Thanks for listening and providing such cool feedback.Much appreciated.

Well the rule of subtlety errr rules here, in that the vocals when sounding quite dry ( and working very well ) really caught my attention, with just that amount of verb and efx.

As for recording that in your bedroom, well that is very inspiring IMO to a lot of people on here who do live recording. The most adventurous I get, is to record my hardware synth gear after first recording the MIDI data, ha,ha!

I am about to get my hands on a guitar soon, ( I play decent enough guitar, for what I want to get out of them ) Just wondered how you recorded it!

Did you go via an amp, or use straight to soundcard then/amp simulation? Do you have a hardware compressor or eq?

Also what soundcard are you using and what did you record the guiters at?

Also, considering you said it was done in your home, what/how did you do the drums?

Jay;= An interested house/tech house producer wanting guitar lessons!!!???

Hi Jay,

I use a Patrick Eggle Berlin guitar which goes into my Roland VG88. The VG88 is an incredible piece of kit and it means I get a nice clean sound straight into the soundcard.
My soundcard is an M-Audio 1010LT (which gives me 1.5 ms latency with Sonar 3 )

The drums are Dry Kit which is at http://www.smartloops.com
I think they are amazing sounding and the fact that they are acidized means I can really chop them up in Sonar. For instance in Verse I dropped the pitch of the drums by half an octave to give it a kind of urban contemorary feel. I love Sonar 3 and acid loops because you can change pitch and tempo completely independently of each other which can yield some interesting results
I overlayed the drums with a shaker sound (I used sea salt from the cupboard!!) and put in some incidental crashes etc using a drum kit loaded up in Kontakt 1.5.1.

Thanks again for the cool feedback mate.

I liked this very much!
Good guitar and vocal.

Production sounds good on my headphones.

Could imagine hearing it on the radio. So i'll guess it's a hit then!

Nice work!
